O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she was promoted to the 100th round. O'Neil was praised highly from the jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three followed by the bottom two. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was made public by President Paul Martin immediately.
